Favorite quotes from Small Bites and Food features Mark Rosenstein on molecular Gastronomy (March 31): "If I were 10 years younger," he says, "perhaps I would be devoting all of my energy into understanding that science. But I'm an emotional cook, not a scientist. There's an emotional side to alchemy, and I think some of […]

Food TV
Xpress has plenty of online content that doesn’t show in the printed paper. One example of that is a video that we’ll call “Battle Bacon.” It marks one of the first multimedia collaborations between staff reporter Jake Frankel and me. What better forum in which to start than summer’s WNC Magazine Chefs Challenge competitions? Those […]
“On a Roll: Food Trucks Want a Piece of the Pie”
When I came on board full-time at Xpress, I hoped my new position would enable me to shed a new and different light on Asheville's amazing food scene, something that's near and dear to my heart (obviously). With this article about street food and one local woman's efforts to follow through on a simple dream […]
“Growing Holiday Cheer”
The Inside/Out article, “Growing Holiday Cheer,” is my favorite of 2010 because it is typical of life; we take so much for granted. Case in point; buying a poinsettia for our holiday tables. We rush into the grocery store for some random item and discover poinsettias have arrived, colorful and wrapped in cellophane It's an […]
Outdoors: “The View from Above”
Of the many adventures I’ve had in life, the balloon ride described in my July 7 article, “The View from Above,” definitely ranked among the most memorable. The serenity and peace I felt as I rode the wind at 6,000 feet have been matched, in my experience, only by the serenity and peace triggered by […]
Green Scene: “PARI Presents a Look Back in Time”
My favorite stories are the ones that involve some adventure and a sense of discovery. My first staff assignment for Xpress promised to deliver on both counts. When the National Security Agency abandoned its top-secret spy station deep within the Pisgah National Forest in the mid-1990s, neighbors southwest of Brevard believed hush-hush government activity was […]
And furthermore…
As 2010 draws to a close, rather than adding one more strident voice to the general holiday hubbub, we thought it might be fun to look back over 12 months of rants, postulations and pleas by assorted members of this astonishingly diverse, emphatically opinionated and sometimes tragically divided community and try to identify some high […]
The most-viewed letters of 2010
Every week, the Mountain Xpress receives a steady bundle (or packet, in Internet terms) of letters, mostly through e-mail, from readers in our community. Whether the subject refers to a specific Xpress article, an experience in Asheville or a reader’s opinion on politics, the economy or any other topical matter, we always welcome contributions. Below […]
Buchi owners’ response to Dec. 22 article
If your Dec. 21 article [“Bottled in Bond,” Xpress] about our company were accurate, we’d be hating on us too. However, the basic premise of the article is false. Because Xpress didn’t get our side of the story, fundamental information is incorrect. In addition, the language used to portray us is misleading and offensive. Buchi […]
“Facilitate fitness” proposal more than a little out of touch
After reading Mark Strazzer's opinion [in response to] the need for automatic doors at the downtown library [“Facilitate Fitness at Pack Library,” Dec. 15 Xpress], I was reminded of another phrase I've heard: "Let them eat cake.” Nice holiday sentiment, Mr. Strazzer. — Patricia Wald Asheville
“The Body Electric: Asheville’s Electronic Music Scene Evolves”
Hundreds of articles into my career at Xpress, it takes a special story to stand out for me. "The Body Electric" is that one for this past year. It's actually a three-part feature covering various aspects of the local electronica scene, and I was joined in the effort by writers Jake Frankel and Gabe Chess […]
Losing the battle at home
You know him. He works in your office, works on your car, sat next to you on the airplane over the holidays. These men are quite different, one from the other, but they have one common ugliness — they think it's OK to beat their wives, girlfriends and children. The pleasant smile he sends to […]
Salting roads harms environment
With so many environmental activists in our mountains, why is there no outcry about the massive salting of roads? Come spring, our roadsides will be deprived of healthy vegetation and our streams and groundwater will be seriously compromised. Even a handful of salt can kill plants, including trees, and the tons of salt dumped on […]

Thousands flock to annual “Homecoming Job Fair” at Biltmore Square Mall
About 2,000 people in search of work braved icy roads Tuesday, Dec. 28, to come to the annual Homecoming Job Fair at the Biltmore Square Mall in Asheville. They were greeted by approximately 86 local employers looking to fill an estimated 1,800 jobs over the next few months.

Brews News: WNC beer highlights of 2010
This has been another standout year for Western North Carolina breweries and craft beer. The craft beer industry seems recession-proof. Here are some WNC beery highlights of 2010, in no particular order.
2010 Twitter overview
Here’s our pretty little graphical representation of the most popular topics from the last year, created by cobbling together over 41,000 tweets collected in our moderated Twitter feed, and running them through a very sophisticated series of tubes.
Digging out: Snow totals around WNC
Last weekend’s snow storm will go down in history as the biggest to ever hit Asheville on Christmas Day. Here’s a look at some of the snow totals from around WNC.
