You know you’ve stumbled upon a special beer week event when you start the night off with a “beermosa” and end with a silly string fight. The LAB’s superhero-inspired beer dinner experience challenged the beer dinner status quo with its combination of live comedy, video, audience participation (complete with costumes for the staff and more dedicated attendees) and, of course, six courses of thoughtfully paired beer and food courses.

City Council hears 2014-15 Operating Budget Proposal
Tuesday’s City Council meeting began with a “point of order” raised by Christopher Chiaramonte immediately after the Pledge of Allegiance. Chiaramonte asked why prayer was no longer included at the beginning of Council meetings — a question he has raised to Council in the past during public comment. Chiaramonte alleged that Mayor Esther Manheimer told Council […]

Angel Redmond, outreach coordinator for the YWCA of Asheville, tells us about summer volunteering opportunities at the YWCA of Asheville.
Udder Shame
In our festival-laden area, it is just grazing the surface to mention those that are outstanding in their fields, such as Brewgrass and Moogfest (and there used to be Bele Chere). However, even bovine versions of these grassroots get-togethers would need to kowtow to herd mentality and homogenization.
Conscious Party: A girl’s best friend
The Asheville branch of the American Association of University Women will celebrate 12 years of the Gaining Education Momentum fund, which provides undergraduate scholarships to UNC Asheville and AB-Tech for women whose education has been interrupted or delayed.
Beer Week: Roundup of last weekend’s local special releases
Out-of-towners like Goose Island and Dogfish Head are set to descend upon Asheville as Beer Week rolls along, but the opening weekend belonged to a handful of local breweries and their special releases. Getting the festivities started was the Asheville Brewers’ Alliance White IPA. Made especially for Beer Week with input from 20 WNC brewers and made at Catawba […]
The other farm-to-table concept: A new exhibit highlights the art of silverware
The word “silverware” is seldom used in reference to real silver. Instead, it’s typically applied to household utensils that are silver-plated at best but more likely to be made of stainless steel, aluminum or even plastic.

Young at heart: Old 97’s grew up. Then they got Messed Up
Halfway through our conversation, the phone line goes dead, and Old 97’s bassist Murry Hammond is cut off midsentence while answering a question about the writing process of Most Messed Up, the band’s 10th full-length record in its 21 years.
Unfinished story: Narrative printmaking exhibition opens at Blue Spiral 1
Local artist Andy Farkas works primarily on engravings and Japanese woodblock prints known as moku hanga. The process, he says, results in “a more watercolor-y feel” — rather than rolling ink onto a carved block or plate, the woodblock itself is moistened and ink is added directly to it.
Smart Bets: Afroman
Joseph Edgar Foreman, aka Afroman, launched his career by selling home recordings of his raps to his eighth-grade classmates. His first tape, which moved 400 copies, was about a teacher who’d had him kicked out of school. “It was selling to teachers, students, just about everybody,” he says in a press release. “I realized that, […]

Ship shape
World Party comes to Asheville It’s possible that the most famous World Party song is “She’s the One,” made a hit single by Robbie Williams in the late ’90s. But World Party founder and core member Karl Wallinger is no stranger to hits: “Ship of Fools” came from the band’s 1986 debut; Wallinger has also […]

Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler May 28-June 3: Cold in Maleficent Chef Locke
In Theaters Though it lacks anything that qualifies the new Next Big Thing, this is a pretty rich week — at least artwise. There are only two mainstream entries — Maleficent and A Million Ways to Die in the West — but there are three art ones. Of those, two are truly remarkable, but the third is […]
Smart Bets: Bombadil
Back in 2009, just before Durham-based folk-pop outfit Bombadil released Tarpits and Canyonlands, bassist Daniel Michalak was diagnosed with neural tension. The condition made it impossible for him to brush his teeth, let alone play an instrument. The tour was canceled and the album kind of fizzled. Happily, after years of treatment, Michalak and his […]

Un-fare: Ride-free day showcases Asheville’s transit system
May 19 was Transit Rider Appreciation Day and Asheville’s buses were free, so I rode as many routes as I could, viewing the city through the windows. It was foggy as I waited for the S3 inbound on Hendersonville Road. I was beginning to think I’d missed it when the driver spotted me in the fog […]
