Letter writer: Local Citizens Climate Lobby chapter offers avenue for climate change activism

Graphic by Lori Deaton

The Citizens Climate Lobby is a grassroots people’s movement  creating the political will for a livable world by empowering individuals to experience breakthroughs in exercising their personal and political power. A local chapter has formed in Asheville and [was] preparing to participate in and support congressional Climate Message Day on June 22.

Approximately 1,000 volunteers [planned to travel]  to Washington to lobby every Congressional representative and demand that they develop the political will to address climate change. Supporters at home will call their representatives.

The level of carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas, must be reduced to avert disastrous effects such as coastal flooding, droughts, famine and species extinction, all of which we are currently experiencing to some extent. The most efficient and effective means to do this is to place a fee on carbon and return the revenue equally to all citizens.

Politicians can argue all they want, but Mother Nature doesn’t argue or negotiate. We must learn to respect our planet’s environment and keep it livable. Citizens Climate Lobby offers a way for us to do this.
