SMALL TOWN: It’s 1 p.m. The lead singer is standing on his porch smoking a cigarette. Practice was supposed to start an hour ago and his bandmates aren’t answering their phones. Then the drummer calls from Taco Bell. Blood sugar issue. Then the bass player shows up, his eyes still partly closed in the early afternoon sunlight.
It could be Austin or Asheville, but it isn’t. It’s Sylva.
“One of the coolest things about being in a small town is that if you’re playing, you’re the only thing happening in town,” said Total War’s frontman Jeremy Rose. “You can count on people coming out because you’re their only option.”
Rose is partly joking, because I’ve just asked him how he plans to make the scene from a little town in the mountains. Total War is a really good band and it’s the first time Rose has really pushed to make something work.
But he’s partly not joking, because he’s a pretty earnest dude. ...

Whatever these guys are doing, it's probably good. Even if it isn't.
And it isn't, that's fine too. It's better than Gaga. It's also probably better than whatever "indie" track you downloaded because you heard from someone who knew someone who was watching SXSW online that this new band was way hot and a lot like Arcade Vampire Wine Power.
