The pumpkin patch sprouts suddenly at Abernethy United Methodist, or so it seems. One day, there's nothing on the green swath of grass alongside the church on Patton Avenue. The next, it's filled with pumpkins and all manner of other gourds.
It's not magic, of course. It takes dozens of church members the better part of a day to unload a truck trailer filled to the brim with 2,700 pumpkins. One by one, men and women and their children move each pumpkin out of the truck and onto the wooden pallets, where they'll be picked over and sold. It's hard work — but it's gratifying. Money raised from the sale of the pumpkins will fund church mission projects.
And the church members and their pastor, the Rev. Tony Sayer, will tell you it's just plain fun to come together around pumpkins — all 2,700 of them.
