On June 6, a host of local businesses will donate portions of their sales to the regional nonprofit Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.

In the last 35 years, the Conservancy and its 1,500 members have protected more than 40,000 acres, including key sites adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Highlands of Roan, and more than 6,000 acres of farmland in Sandy Mush near Asheville, N.C. On Saturday, June 6, these local businesses will contribute to the cause, based on what you buy that day in their establishments: Mast General Store (15 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville; and 63 N. Main Street, Waynesville); The Natural Home (36 N. Lexington Avenue, Asheville); Second Gear (444 Haywood Road, Asheville); Ten Thousand Villages (10 College Street, Asheville); Bellagio (5 Biltmore Plaza, Asheville); Blue Spiral 1 Gallery (38 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville); Early Girl Eatery (8 Wall Street, Asheville); Fine Arts Theatre (36 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville); Laughing Seed Café (40 Wall Street, Asheville); Lighten Up! Yoga (60 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville); New Morning Gallery (7 Boston Way, Asheville); and Weinhaus (86 Patton Avenue, Asheville). Other corporate sponsors include Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria, Carolina Native Nursery, Four Corners Home, Kee Mapping and Surveying, Mountain Xpress and Nona Mia Italian Kitchen.

SAHC works with individuals and local communities to conserve the clean water, unique plant and animal habitat, local farmland and recreational treasures of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. It also sponsors hikes and other events, such as its June 12-14 "Jamboree" and annual meeting in Crossnore, N.C., at the Corpening
Training Center at Gill State Forest. The event features several Roan Mountain hikes, a native-plant sale and a presentation by Peter Weigl, biology professor at Wake Forest University. For more information, contact SAHC at 253-1248 or visit the Web site at www.appalachian.org.
