FROM BREVARD COLLEGE
Brevard College Receives Leon Levine Foundation Scholarship for Appalachian Women
Brevard College recently received a gift from the Leon Levine Foundation to provide scholarship opportunities for Appalachian women with financial need.
The $5,000 gift will be used to help qualified women from Appalachia attend and graduate from Brevard College.
"Thanks to this generous gift from the Leon Levine Foundation, Brevard College will be able to continue to provide educational opportunities for women in the Appalachian region who otherwise would not have the resources to attend college," said Brevard College President Drew L. Van Horn.
Brevard College’s commitment to aid Appalachian families began in 1853 in a one-room schoolhouse where the college's first leader, The Reverend Laban Abernethy, set as a goal that, "None shall ever be turned away for want of means." Currently, almost 25 percent of the College’s student body comes from western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, northeastern Georgia, southwestern Virginia and northwestern South Carolina. Additionally, 92 percent of Brevard College students receive some amount of financial aid, so every scholarship dollar we procure is most helpful.
