From the Buncombe County government website:
50 years ago this month, September 1961, Pack Memorial Library was desegregated through the strategic work of the Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equality (ASCORE).
A commemoration in ASCORE's honor will be held on Sunday, September 18 at 3 p.m. at the YMI Cultural Center (site of the former African American library) and will end at the Asheville Art Museum (site of the white library) with refreshments. Oralene Simmons and Viola Spells will speak. Ms. Simmons and Ms. Spells were the members of the ASCORE committee that met with library chair Anthony Lord to negotiate the desegregation.
These events are part of a larger 5 year plan to commemorate the various desegregations that ASCORE achieved as well as the sponsorship of a youth leadership development program. The coalition is chaired by Namurah Blakely and David Miles. To volunteer or for more information, call 828-252-5024.Read the full article
