ASHEVILLE – On 10-12-11 at approx. 10:01 pm, officers from the Asheville Police Departments Traffic Safety Unit responded to a motor vehicle collision at the I240E off-ramp from I-26W.

Upon arrival it was determined that a 2002 Chrysler Sebring (operated by Roger Lee McCroskey, W/M, 10/20/41 of Hudson, NC) was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-26W and collided with a 1999 Dodge Ram (operated by Brent Marshall Smathers, W/M, 06/26/73 of Mars Hill, NC). This traffic crash caused the I-240 (E) off ramp to be closed for approximately 3 hours with NCDOT being notified of the closure.

At this time Mr. McCroskey is at Mission Hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries and his passenger (Ruby Coffey Roberts, W/F, 11/27/42 of Lenoir, NC) is in surgery in critical condition. Mr. Smathers is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information, or anyone who may have witnessed the collision, should contact Traffic Officer Ann Fowler at 251-4089 or crimestoppers at 255-5050.
