"I'm not smart enough to have enough adjectives about the emotions that I feel right now," he said at his introductory media conference in the Smith Center, shortly after he signed a six-year contract after his hiring was approved by the university's Board of Trustees.
"It's a special, special place. And it's such an honor to be part of it. And I can guarantee you that I will work as hard as anybody you've ever seen to make this a better place."
Cunningham, 49, spent the past seven years as the AD at Tulsa. At North Carolina, he will succeed Dick Baddour on Nov. 14, and will take over one of the country's most successful programs but one also facing troubles with the NCAA for problems in the football program.
Cunningham will be paid $525,000 a year and will have a $40,000 expense account. He will receive a bonus of one month's salary each if: the football team plays in a bowl game; the men's basketball team makes the NCAA tournament; or the women's basketball team makes the NCAA tournament.
