N.C. DOT announces a new schedule for I-26 closure:
Due to inclement weather forecasted through Monday, contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation have delayed the scheduled closure schedule of Interstate 26 at Exit 53 in Henderson County related to the construction of a new bridge over the interstate on Upward Road. The closure of both directions of I-26 will now begin on Wednesday, Nov. 2, and will take place every weekday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. until at least Wednesday, Nov. 16.
During the closure, traffic will be detoured up the off-ramp at Exit 53 (Upward Road) and back down the on-ramp to I-26. Advance warning signs and traffic control devices, as well as police, will be in place to aid with the movement of traffic.
A scheduled shift in traffic on Upward Road to a temporary detour bridge over I-26 has also been delayed, and will now take place overnight on Tuesday, Nov. 1. That night, lane closures will be in place on Upward Road and police will assist with traffic flow to enable contractors paint the detour bridge, move and install signs and reroute traffic.
The construction of the new six-lane bridge over I-26 is part of a $24 million project to widen Upward Road near Hendersonville to a four-lane divided highway between U.S. 176 and Howard Gap Road. The project contractor is Blythe Development Co. of Charlotte.
