In a faxed statement to WLOS, Buncombe County District Attorney Ron Moore has responded to allegations made by hacker and writer Barrett Brown that he's tied to drug gangs:
"This allegation is not true and it is the height of negligent and irresponsible journalism to promote this untrue and unverified gossip. Sadly, we live in a climate where elected officials are attacked in blogs by unscrupulous individuals who do not believe they should be held accountable for their libel. Respectable journalism should not promote this libel and sensationalize unverified gossip."
According to a report on Forbes magazine's technology blog, Brown claimed yesterday that Moore was tied to Mexican drug cartels. However, today, in a public chat about the issue, witnessed by Xpress, Brown instead said that Moore is cooperating with an American gang, the Houstones.Read the full article

Does he have proof that the allegations are not true or is that the only response?

I want to get a look at these emails, if they truly exist.
Meanwhile, I think it's time to start researching drug-related prosecutions in the area over the last little bit, to see if anything looks shady.
And what happened with that evidence room audit that was going on?
How many ways are there for a DA in NC to help a drug supply chain anyway? I'm thinking quite a few.
I'd like to know if any traffic cops out there have ever had a code come over the radio to let a car go, or otherwise suspicious instructions from above.
This could be the biggest soap opera of the year.

It's hard to prove a negative, TRM. Better that Barrett prove the allegations against Moore.
Also, calling Forbes magazine "negligent and irresponsible" is just awesome.
