From the press release:
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has again ranked the heart surgery program at Mission Hospital and the cardiovascular surgeons of Asheville Heart with its top “3-star” rating for how well patients did following coronary artery bypass grafting procedures. Only 10 percent of hospitals ranked achieved this level.

Among the criteria studied are mortality rates, complication rates, and whether the practices associated with best outcomes were consistently followed for all patients.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons began its twice a year ranking of heart surgery services in 2006. Mission’s heart surgery program has received a 3-star rating for every six month ranking since it began.

“This ranking reflects Mission’s emphasis on quality care, prevention of error and omission, and passion for giving every patient an excellent experience,” said Karen G. Lemieux, vice president of heart services for Mission Hospital. “It takes our staff and the cardiovascular surgeons working closely together and committed to quality to achieve these results.”
