Area girls ages 9-14 are invited to a PARI SciGirls program called “Wind Power- Part II” Tuesday, November 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The program is a follow-up to last month’s program and again will be hosted at the Transylvania County Extension Center at 98 East Morgan Street in Brevard. The event is part of PARI’s monthly SciGirls series and is affiliated with the national effort to engage girls in science sponsored by Twin Cities Public Television.

“I’d like to stress that attendance at last month’s SciGirl program is NOT required for attendance at this program,” said Christi Whitworth, PARI education director. “All girls are welcome. We will be using information gained from design challenges at last month’s session but each girl will be part of a team with a new challenge: to create better wind turbines and measure the energy created in their designs. Participants will be helped to find an efficient and stable design to maximize the turbine’s rotor speed and performance. We would also like to thank United Community Bank for their efforts to interest young girls in science by collaborating in this program with PARI and the Transylvania County 4-H. The bank has agreed to sponsor the first 20 girls who register for this session.”

PARI hosts a SciGirls event the last Tuesday of each month. The participation fee is $10 per student, however, this month the fee will be waived for the first 20 girls to register. All girls ages 9-14 are eligible.

Program details, specific hours and registration details can be found on the PARI web site, www.pari.edu. Participants can register at www.pari.edu/programs/students/scigirls. Area teachers and parents are asked to encourage girls who may be interested. The national SciGirls web site is http://pbskids.org/scigirls.
