Downtown business owner of Zapow! (Matt Johnson @NCMattJ) is tweeting:
Why is the Wall Street Parking Deck charging $7 for "Special Event" parking? What special event? Gouging shoppers?
As a downtown merchant, if true, I am hopping mad. They should be encouraging people to come downtown and shop!
I think they are doing it for the Disney show at the civic center...but that is 4 blocks away and has it's own deck!
Not cool for Black Friday. Trying to make a living here.

According to the parking person I spoke with, the special event is Disney on Ice all weekend, and a String Cheese Incident show today.

According to the parking person at Wall Street, String Cheese Incident and Disney on Ice are both playing today.

The "special event" rate at the Citys' decks is dependent upon what is happening at the Civic Center ... this is nothing new.
By the way, isn't the first hour free, regardless of whether there is a special event?

I don't believe that is true. I believe special event parking is a flat rate, regardless of time spent in the space.

No, special event rates rip off the 1 hour thing

It seems to me that the first hour free should continue regardless ... obviously no one is going to leave a show every hour and move their car to a different garage.
Especially if the "special event" is in the daytime ...

That won't work, unfortunately. The special-event fee is only collected at the time of entry, so if they let a car in for "one hour," there's no way to collect the special-event fee once it's in an parked. And compounding the problem: During special events, the exit gate is left open, since no regular fees are being collected at the time of exit.
