APD investigating death of man found in French Broad River

ASHEVILLE – On Saturday, 12-03-11, at approx. 12:00 pm, APD Officers received a call from three individuals who believed they had located a body in the French Broad River near Jean Webb Park.

Officers responded to the scene and confirmed that it was a body in the River. Upon review of the individuals NC ID which was found on his person, and in consultation with the medical examiner, the individual was identified as Kelly Edward Metcalf Jr., W/M, 11-30-59. Mr. Metcalf was recently staying at the WNC Rescue Mission located at 225 Patton Ave.

There were no apparent signs of trauma to Mr. Metcalf; however, due to the nature of the death, an autopsy will be performed this week in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Metcalf’s “next-of-kin” have been located in Columbus, OH and notified.
