Stray dogs in McDowell County have moved up in the world. McDowell County Animal Outreach has gotten final approval from the city of Marion to lease an old car dealership and turn it into a new adoption center, according to a McDowell News report.
The old county shelter, which was 800 sq. ft., had an 75-80 percent kill rate. The new site boasts 22,000 sq. ft. and will have room for a dog park and will eventually connect to the city greenway.
The county has entered into a one-year contract to have MCAO provide shelter services for the county.
The McDowell News article details the drama of getting the plan approved and gives more information about the new facility.
