Wind Turbine Construction Nears Completion; ribbon-cutting ceremony coming Dec. 14
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 2 p.m. to commemorate the completion of the Watauga High School Skystream 3.7 wind turbine. Boone mayor Loretta Clawson is expected to attend, as well as Appalachian State University Wind Applications Center staff, Watauga High School students and faculty. The event is open to the public.
Watauga High School, in conjunction with the Appalachian State University Wind Applications Center, Sundance Power Systems, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind for Schools Program, recently began work to install the 2.4 kilowatt turbine at the Watauga campus. ASU Wind Applications Center staff worked with Watauga High School faculty to incorporate real-time data monitoring and K-12 science curriculum related to renewable energy. Appalachian State University has supervised 7 small scale wind turbine installations at schools throughout North Carolina this year with plans to continue the project at additional schools next year. Beyond the turbine installations, the project includes workshops, webinars, and assistance in helping K-12 teachers educate students about renewable energy.
