State to fund clearing of French Broad logjam, stop erosion

North Carolina has agreed to provide funding to clear a logjam spanning the French Broad River in Transylvania County that has eroded hundreds of tons of soil.

The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources approved a $25,000 grant to remove debris that has blocked the river near the county airport for more than a year.

“This will reduce the tremendous erosion and sedimentation that’s been going into the river,” said Bob Twomey, district conservationist for the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service. “That will benefit water quality and the fishery and biologic resources and recreation.”
