Dogs recovering from trauma in Asheville have a new physical therapy available to aid recovery: An underwater treadmill for dogs is now in use at Charlotte Street Animal Hospital. Similar to underwater therapy for humans, this device, which looks a bit like a hot tub, allows the patient to exercise healing limbs using the reduced weight-environment of water. Controllable jet streams can add resistance as needed.
This is the first of its kind in Asheville, according to Charlotte Street Animal Hospital. No word on whether area cats will take advantage of pool therapy.
Vets wanting to offer this therapy can choose from at least eight manufacturers of hydro-therapy equipment for pets. Here's a video of a Hydrotreadmill therapy session.
