Husband of slain woman charged with 1st degree murder, had history of abuse charges

Shelby Sprowls Wilkie told family and friends she was leaving her abusive husband. Two days before her planned departure, he reported her missing.

Michael Wilkie had threatened to kill her if she left him, according to court records.

And the woman’s family told detectives she never would have left without her 3-month-old daughter.

“Her last few days Shelby was trying to leave an abusive relationship,” said Dustin Sprowls, Shelby Sprowls Wilkie’s brother. “But she was afraid that, if she did, what would happen to her child, and she did everything that she could to protect her.”

After three days of searching and investigating, Henderson County deputies charged Wilkie with first-degree murder.
