"Benjamin Franklin" comes to Flat Rock

On Saturday, January 14 at 12:15 PM, the Village of Flat Rock, NC will receive a visit from the distinguished First Postmaster General of the independent United States, author, printer, diplomat and scientific enquirer, “Benjamin Franklin.” This visit at the Historic Post Office building, is sponsored by Occupy Hendersonville, a local group of engaged citizens supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement, the Postal Service and the 200 postal workers at the Asheville Regional Mail Processing Center.
 
Mr. Franklin appeared with General Washington on the first postage stamps of the United States, issued in 1847, also the date of the founding of the Flat Rock post office.
 
Mr. Franklin will offer appreciation and remarks in support of the postal system he helped to organize and adapt to an independent America, with reflections on recent proposals to restrict service in Western North Carolina, and throughout the United States. He will be delighted to respond to questions from postal service customers, employees and the public.
