SEED STARTING

At Mills River Educational Farm

10am – 4:30pm
Class limit = 30
Cost = $15 for Co-op owners/ $20 general public, sign up at the register
A full spectrum class covering the main aspects of growing from seed such as:
selection, timing, growing mediums, germination and lighting.
The class will be hands on and include interactive sessions of making potting soils, seeding techniques (including large scale vacuum seeding), setting up an indoor lighting system for early growth and building a cost effective thermostatically controlled germination chamber
and heat table.
Class will also cover selecting the right seed varieties and knowing when to start them, buying and/or making the best potting soil to start seeds in, which amendments to use considering their unique impacts such as enhancing or inhibiting germination, and a brief reprise of November’s low cost greenhouse construction session with demonstration of hoop bending.
Class is Saturday, January 28, 2012, from 10am-4:30pm with an hour lunch break. Fresh
water and a garden salad will be provided to go along with your bagged lunch.
Directions to Mills River Educational Farm at 176 Kimzey Road: from Asheville, take Interstate 26 to Airport exit, go right on 280 towards Brevard. After 7 traffic lights, go right on South Mills River Road directly across from the Valley Ag store on left. Go about a mile and turn onto Bryson Road, then go right on Kimzey Road. Farm entrance is directly
on right.
