Meg Lowman, an N.C. State University professor and forest canopy expert who directs the Nature Research Center at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, writes in the Charlotte Observer:
Saliva is essential to our health, serving an unglamorous role to clean our mouths, fight tooth decay and digest food. But doctors are now joining dentists to exclaim about the importance of spit for the clues it conveys about our health.
