Dead Leaf Echo from New York describes their name as "Conjured images of drugged passions fading into nihilistic apprehension." That's a good summation of the band's sound, too. Dreamy, plush, atmospheric morphine pop with hints of Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs and Mazzy Star and something more — something immediate and incandescent.

Their newest release, the haunting, subaqueous single "Kingmaker" was produced by John Fryer (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil), who has mixed the band's forthcoming LP Thought and Language. Listen to "Kingmaker" here:



On their way to South by Southwest, Dead Leaf Echo (Ana B. on guitar, keys and vocals; Christo B. on guitar and keys; LG on guitar, keys and vocals) stops through Asheville. They'll play Broadways. 10 p.m.
