Dozens of people came out in the rain for Train History Day at the Cradle of Forestry on Saturday. Visitors, ranging from ages eight to 90, blew the whistle and rang the bell of a 1915 Climax logging train. Historian Jerry Ledford started the afternoon with two presentations on the history of logging trains. Photos revealed train wrecks, stone-faced conductors and remarkable train trestles that spanned rivers and mountain passes. The Asheville chapter of the National Railway Historical Society displayed a yard full of colorful model trains and encouraged kids marvel at tiny replicas of these powerful machines.
