Asheville Citizen-Times studies one family's struggle with food insecurity

Recently, the Food Research and Action Center in Washington released rankings that put the Asheville metro area third-worst among 100 metropolitan areas in the United States. Local media have been exploring the issue and the data (click here here to go to mountainx.com/hunger). Here's an excerpt from a March 17 Asheville Citizen-Times report, "Faces of Asheville Area Hunger Dominated by Children, Seniors, Single-parents," by Casey Blake:

The carton in [the Lail-Little] household fridge has little tick marks on it to track their consumption, so they can ration it between visits to the food stamp benefits office and, when it’s necessary, food pantries to fill in the gaps.

[Twelve-year-old] Cameron is just one of thousands of families in Western North Carolina struggling with food insecurity, which, according to a recent study, the Asheville area is fighting harder than most.

New data from the Food Research and Action Center in Washington ranked the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area — which includes Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood and Madison counties — as third-worst among 100 metropolitan areas surveyed (see accompanying story). ...
