... Elected officials have an inside track when it comes to getting their names emblazoned on a roadside sign, a process that has ignited anger among firefighters and others in Asheville.

A Board of Transportation committee in March turned down a request from City Council and the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners that Smoky Park Bridge be renamed in memory of Jeff Bowen, who died fighting a fire in an office building near Mission Hospital last year.

An online petition asking that the committee’s decision be reversed has more than 7,700 signatures. Because of public concern, a Board of Transportation committee will revisit the issue Wednesday in Raleigh. ...
