Last Friday, April 13, a draft report indicated a state legislative committee will recommend removing city control of the water system and transferring it to the Metropolitan Sewerage District. That some day, opponents of the the move gathered to hold a press conference. Here's a video of the event posted via the YouTube page of "peterofasheville":

Here's a bit of information via the "Speaking for Buncombe" website: https://speakingforbuncombe.wordpress.com/

Last Friday, we held a press conference to put out the word about Rep. Tim Moffitt’s illogical and undemocratic power grab of the Asheville water system by the state. This video features remarks by Elaine Lite, President of Mountain Voices Alliance; Tim Schaller, President of Asheville Brewers Alliance; Chris Pelly, Asheville City Council and MSD Board member; and David Gantt, Chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. (Thank you Peter Brezny for taping.)

On an issue like this, is this really the best the City of Asheville's media can do, an agitator like me has to post it on a thread on a blog where maybe 5 people will read it?

    • Why did the Democrats in the General Assembly set up state government to be "illogical and undemocratic" in the first place?

    • We would not be in the poor situation we are in now if water fees had been spent on legally required repairs and maintenance instead of as a revenue stream for other things.

A continued re-hash of one of the lies surrounding this issue. The City has been barred by law from using water revenue for anything but running and maintaining the system, for years. Period. It currently enjoys a high rating for management, for water quality, and for fiscal stability. It isn't broke, so why is the State going to such great lengths to seize it?

These lies are meant to grease the skids for an un-elected body to get their hands on an increasingly scarce precious resource that we all depend on. And the people who are pushing it are fervent believers in privatizing everything in sight. You connect the dots.

    • Hey, my comment in response the Moffitt supporter lady disappeared. Here’s what I wrote:

MSD rates have gone up faster than Asheville’s water rates, so Moffitt’s supporters are in for a big surprise if they think their rates are going to be lower. Check Sunday’s Asheville Citizen Times if you don't believe me.

Moffitt wants no restrictions on running water line extensions. This will cost money to do and maintain, and yet, you honestly think no one’s rates will be raised to pay for this? That defies logic.

Ideologues like Moffitt decry big government, yet once in office, it’s all about taking away local control and democratic process and giving us more Big Brother. I find it hard to believe that many people respect the way he his hammering at the people of Buncombe County. His shenanigans support Art Pope, ALEC, and other extremist blowhards – not the people of Buncombe. See my blog to learn more: http://speakingforbuncombe.wordpress.com/moffittpopealec/

P.S. Tim, I think it was wrong for the Dems to pass Sullivan II & III, and I disagree with their action on that particular piece of legislation as much as I disagree with Moffitt on this. Susan Fisher has said it was a mistake that she has learned from.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s clear that Moffitt is the type who cannot admit a mistake and apparently doesn’t give a hoot about public input or have any respect for our civic process. If this all goes through, I hope the lady who commented earlier in favor of Moffitt enjoys subsidizing Henderson County's sewer costs.
