From the Yancey County News:

The Yancey County News, a year-old weekly newspaper in Burnsville, has been awarded the 2012 Ancil Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism by the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon.

Judges said the work of Jonathan and Susan Austin is “classic public interest journalism" performed "at great personal and economic risk.”

The Austins - both Asheville natives - will travel to Detroit next week to receive the 2011 E.W. Scripps Award for Distinguished Service to the First Amendment, which was announced in March for their newspaper's 2011 series of stories that exposed likely vote fraud in Yancey County and the theft of county owned guns by a high ranking law officer.
