Classical choral music may not be generally considered a rhythm-centric form. Terms such as lofty, solemn and fluid seem more fitting for the effect of a group of layered voices working in concert. While these aspects will be a part of Asheville Choral Society's season-closing program, Rytmus, in performance on May 18 and 19 at Central United Methodist Church in downtown Asheville, the ensemble of 80-plus singers will hew toward the beat.

According to an ACS release, the title, Rytmus, is "borrowed from a piece by the venerable Slovak composer Ivan Hrusovsky," and is Latin for rhythm. The performance will feature "a number of innovative works, both traditional and contemporary, that exemplify the many ways composers explore, and even exploit, rhythm."

Conducted by Melodie Galloway, performances take place Friday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 19 at 4:00 p.m. Both shows are at Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church St., Asheville. For more information, and tickets, visit http://www.ashevillechoralsociety.org.
