Across the state, fewer than a quarter-million residents turned out to vote in various runoff races. North Carolina has more than 6 million people registered voters. Only 3.58 percent of them voted, according to the state Board of Elections' early results.
In the 11th Congressional District, 22,835 people voted in the runoff between GOP candidates Mark Meadows and Vance Patterson. According to the BOE's Jan. 2012 tally, there are 389,834 registered voters in the district — which stretches from Caldwell County to Cherokee County but, after the 2011 redistricting, now excludes most of Asheville. That's close to a 6 percent turnout in the district.
In Buncombe County, 4,979 ballots were cast — 3.58 percent of the 173,680 registered voters.
Cashiers businessman Mark Meadows was declared the runoff winner. He'll face Democrat Hayden Rogers in the fall election.
