County prepares to foot bill for Serenity slope

Buncombe County taxpayers will likely have to foot the bill to correct drainage problems at a failed subdivision [Serenity Forest off McKinnish Cove Road in Leicester] that endangered 10 nearby homes and prompted the voluntary evacuations of three of them. ...

Officials have been scrambling to find funds to correct the subdivision’s problems and discussing who should take on financial responsibility for the project. Jerry VeHaun, the county’s emergency management director, said state officials “claimed they have no funds or no way to take care of the problem.”

... Officials say it's too early to estimate how much the project will cost. ...
