It was in 2007 that Jay Sanders (who plays the bass-and-guitar combo called the N/S Stick) and Steve Alford (alto clarinet) formed the E.Normus Trio, out of jam sessions at the now-defunct Joli Rouge and in honor of Alford's dog, Norman E. Normus. Drummer Michael W. Davis rounds out the trio; together they recently recorded Love and Barbiturates. Of that album (recorded with little overdubbing or variance in texture and layering), the band says, "The debate is still ongoing as to whether this is a jazz, rock or soul record, or something new altogether." Decide for yourself at the CD release party on Thursday, Aug. 2 at The Lab. The show will also be filmed for a live music video. J.Ray Goes Beatnik opens. 9 p.m., $5.
