Apothecary (39-B South Market St.) is a new multi-use space that "unites the burgeoning creative atmosphere of Appalachia and beyond in a room where art and ideas are appreciated for their own sake, for their own nourishing qualities, and for their own potential for higher consciousness," according to the facility's mission statement. The space (in the same building as the YMI Cultural Center) opens this weekend with a kickoff party on Friday, Aug. 31, 9 p.m.-midnight.

Check out Apothecary — and four bands — for a mere five bucks. Here's who's on the lineup:

• Casual Curious (from Greensboro, N.C.) — The band says its "sounds typically induces physical movement, biological reactions affecting mood, as well as stimulating cognitive activity that may lead other humans to reflect on their day-to-day behaviors and activities."

• Local band Alligator Indian — an experimental noise-pop duo and AHA AVL alum. Read about them here.

• Fine Peduncle (from Knoxville) — a one-man electronic band and performance art show as well as a Moogfest and Bonnaroo alum. Read about him here.

• Persona la Ave (also from Knoxville) who describe their sound as such: "Imagine if acid rain gets in the exoskeletons of two Honda ASIMO robots and they tried to have sex and electrocuted each other."
