As part of its current exhibition, Mel Chin: High, Low and In Between, the Asheville Art Museum hosts a special screening of Chin’s animated film 9-11/9-11 on Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the East Wing’s New Media Gallery.
Chin originally premiered the film in 2007, but the story and animations are based on a 2002 graphic novella he authored under the pen name Ignacio Moreles. The hand-drawn film was created in collaboration with American filmmaker Chip Schneider and Piano Visual Estudio de Animacion, a Chilean animation partnership.
The film follows Mike Smith, a former CIA agent, his daughter, Julia, and a homeless waiter and Chilean refugee named Salvador. Smith reminisces of his past endeavors, which include aiding the military coup d'état that put Pinochet in power and helping the Taliban strengthen to fight off the Russians in the 1980s. Salvador and Julia work at Windows on the World, a restaurant on the top floor of one of the World Trade Center buildings. Free with membership or museum admission.
