from the WNC Historical AssociationThe Western North Carolina Historical Association has recently presented a program on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Western North Carolina. Continuing that focus, the Association will host an evening conversation with retired Chief Justice of the Cherokee Supreme Court, Harry C. Martin, on Thursday, September 27, at 7 pm. The event will take place at the Smith McDowell House Museum at 273 Victoria Road, Asheville, N.C., and is free and open to the public.
Justice Martin, a retired Associate Justice to the Supreme Court of North Carolina, became the Chief Justice of the Cherokee Supreme Court of the Eastern Band in 2000. He supervised the creation of the new Tribal Court system on the Qualla Indian Boundary. He established the Cherokee Court which has become a leading example among the Indian Nations. When he retired in 2006, he was made an Honorary member of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.
Justice Martin will discuss his experiences in a conversation style setting, moderated by J. Richard Gruber, PhD. The Justice will be accompanied by his son, Matthew Martin, currently an Associate Judge at the Cherokee Court. Refreshments will be served.
