Thomas Wolfe would have been 112 years old earlier this month — nearly three times his actual time here on Earth — his childhood home damaged in an unsolved arson fire, but still standing. His remains lay among his family, below some nice shade trees. There are almost always flowers on his grave. People who read his books do not forget him.

Neither has the Asheville Track Club. The Thomas Wolfe 8K has been organized by them almost as long as Wolfe lived, lacking two years to meet that milestone.

In that time, thousands have run the course to help raise money for the Literacy Council of Buncombe County.

Saturday, Oct. 20, was no different, but there were some special guests directing runners through the curving cemetery roadsL Three zombies greeted the runners among the suddenly beautiful autumn colors.

Where else but Asheville could you be greeted by machine-gun zombie as you ran under a canopy of stunning color?

Or get congrats on running from an undead hand?
