As an undergraduate at Duke University, Johnson majored in Electrical Engineering serving as the basis for his work in patents, trademarks and copyrights. He completed his juris doctor at the University of South Carolina.
Johnson began his legal career with the United States Patent Office in the Washington, D.C. area before moving to private practice.
