Winter is a chilly time for outdoor dogs. Sleet, snow and freezing temperatures are enough to make any animal shiver, no matter how much fur it has. ChainFree Asheville has a solution: a cozy doghouse just for Fido. The group will collect new and used doghouses on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. outside the Asheville Petco, 825 Brevard Road.
Since 2008, ChainFree Asheville has dispatched "canine social workers" to prevent owners from tethering their dogs to trees and other structures in the backyard. The group works with families to build fences and encourage healthy pet practices.
There will be a dog house drive on Nov. 17 to honor ChainFree Asheville's founder Peggy Irwin. The public can donate used or new doghouses, of any size and make, as long as they are clean, water tight and sturdy. The doghouses will be donated to Haywood County Animal Control. The public can also drop off doghouses at Haywood County Animal Services, 245 Hemlock St., Waynesville.
If you don't have a doghouse to spare, ChainFree Asheville will also accept cedar pet bedding, egg carton foam, plastic tarps and wooden pallets during the drive. Plant restaurant in Asheville will also donate a percentage of its sales to the cause on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
