Looking for unique gifts? Want to support both local businesses, independent business owners and (by extension) a cool, local liberal arts college? The 2012 Holiday Alumni Gift Guide, just published by Warren Wilson College boasts dozens of ideas — from food and crafts to clothing and services. All of these can be found at businesses across North Carolina (many are in WNC) that are owned by Warren Wilson graduates.

Want local examples? Astral Buoyancy (owned by Philip Curry, class of '95) specializes in life jackets (even life jackets for dogs) and other accessories for water activities. Joanna Gollberg Designer Jewelry (Gollberg also graduated in '95) sells handmade jewelry. Pies in Disguise belongs to Eliza Sydney and Ben Herring, both class of '08 — they make delicious homemade pie, though that goes without saying. And for the music lover in your life, Black Mountain-based Song of the Wood (owned by Jerry Read Smith, class of '77) carries dulcimers, harps, bowed psalteries and more.
