Press release
from The Van Winkle Law Firm
Squeezing more than 40 attorneys into one holiday card was the challenge. The Van Winkle Law Firm’s marketing director, Paul Choi, called on Sam Ita, a college friend. Ita, of New York, is a paper engineer, the preferred term for pop-up artists by the Moveable Book Society, an enthusiast group for pop-up and moveable books. Ita has authored and engineered several children’s books including Moby Dick: A Pop-Up Book and The Odyssey: A Pop-Up Book.
“The most difficult part was assembling 40 full body photographs into an area the size of two postcards,” said Ita. “And it had to fold flat.” Screenshots of the Van Winkle holiday pop-up card. For full resolution images, please contact: pchoi@vwlawfirm.com
But Ita is no stranger to complex pop-up designs. His books feature ships with full masts and sails and Greek gods casting lightning bolts. In their holiday card, The Van Winkle Law Firm’s attorneys stand side by side, greeting the reader like a choir.
“Our clients are delighted,” said Van Winkle attorney Carolyn L. Coward. “We’ve nearly run out of our original order.”
To promote the card, Choi looked to local filmmaker, Ian Urquhart, of For All Audiences, LLC, a production company based in Candler. Urquhart, a native of Asheville, spent seven years as a writer and producer for Comedy Central in New York. “We wanted stop motion animation with a magical story about the card,” said Choi. “We gave Ian an outline and he brought it to life.”
