The cello is kind of a secret weapon. It's smooth and orchestral, but effectively emotive and surprisingly versatile. Think: Ben Sollee, Pearl and the Beard and Rasputina. And add Asheville's own Polly Panic to that list — the cello rock band's show has been described as "an assaulting tenderness entangled with dark, odd metered theater." Front woman Jenette Mackie possesses a haunting and commanding presence; her songs are spooky and compelling and she takes the cello into new territory. Polly Panic performs at the Emerald Lounge on Saturday, May 11 with Paw Tooth and Comet West. 9 p.m., $5. http://www.emeraldlounge.com.
