Where: MANNA campus, 627 Swannanoa River Road.
When: Saturday, June 1. 7-11 p.m. $70. Info at http://www.mannafoodbank.org or 299-FOOD.
Why: In 1982, E.T. ruled the movie theaters and women were "feeling the burn" with Jane Fonda's workout videos. That same year, a group of dedicated volunteers and staff had a vision for a nonprofit that would work to end hunger in Western North Carolina. MANNA will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a Blue Jean Ball to celebrate three decades of providing nourishment to WNC residents — all while kicking up their high tops, ‘80s style.
Now that stonewashed jeans are experiencing a resurgence, the Blue Jean Ball is the perfect excuse to dig out those high-waist fashion statements. A photo booth will document every retro moment and a costume contest will pit the area's top '80s enthusiasts against each other. Everyone is invited to join in a group '80s dance and bring a photo of themselves from the Reagan era.
There will be plenty of beer, wine and small plates from some of the area's top restaurants, including Luella's, French Broad Chocolate Lounge and the brand new breakfast spot Biscuit Head. All proceeds go directly to MANNA FoodBank, so don't miss this opportunity to honor 30 years of full bellies and the promise of a hunger-free WNC.
