Tags:The Asheville CIty Association of Educators is holding a protest march today, gathering at Asheville Middle School at 5 p.m. The march is at the same time as one held by the NCAE in Raleigh.
The NCAE has opposed the latest education overhaul, including cuts, an end to teacher tenure, no pay raises, and an end to bonuses for educators who pursue higher education. The protests in Raleigh are part of the larger Moral Monday rallies opposing the policies of the North Carolina General Assembly. The NCAE has announced its intention to sue the state over several measures, including a voucher program, asserting that the budget passed by the general assembly violates state constitutional requirements to provide education for all.
The local march, "to support our schools and teachers," according to the announcement on Facebook, will proceed through downtown and the ACAE is encouraging attendees to "wear red, bring signs and friends."
