ASHEVILLE, NC, August 20, 2013 – Girls on the Run® of Western North Carolina (GOTR of WNC) is excited to announce the start of another season of their program with registration beginning on August 26, 2013 and continuing through September 6, 2013.
“We are very excited for all the girls, coaches and volunteers who will be participating in the Fall season,” states Amy Renigar, GOTR of WNC’s Executive Director. She continues, “Every year we are able to serve more girls in our communities. It’s nice to know this program is making a difference in their lives and we’re looking forward to doing the same this season.” This will be the 11th year the non-profit has been serving girls across WNC. The program will run from September 9th through December 2nd and ends with the celebratory Fall 5K on Saturday, December 7th.
Girls in the 3rd through 8th grades can be registered either on-line or by paper registration, depending upon the site location, starting August 26th. In addition to the bi-weekly after-school sessions, registration includes a t-shirt, water bottle, daily snacks and entry into the 5k race. Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program for girls in 3rd-8th grades, which encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The Girls on the Run curricula address all aspects of girls’ development – their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being with topics such as self-esteem, healthy lifestyle habits, setting goals, teamwork, keeping promises and good communication skills. The program also prepares the girls to participate in a 5K (3.1 mile) run at the end of the 12-week session, 24-lesson program.
