"The Tarocco Piemontese was a 15th century Italian card game, consisting of four suits (much like our modern playing cards) and twenty two trump cards, numbered 0-21," says the theater group's website. "Modern Tarot evolved out of Renaissance decks such as this, and we still see the same strange characters among its trump cards; the Magician, the Lovers, Death, the Hanged Man, etc. With Card 0 (the Fool) as our enigmatic guide, Tarocco will take its viewers through the remaining twenty one trump cards, designed by some of Asheville’s most innovative performers, dancers, acrobats, puppeteers, artists, costumers, maskmakers, and builders."
In an email, Fox & Beggar founder Nat Allister explained, "The idea is to showcase a couple dozen Asheville artists within the play's many mediums, all using a 500-year-old Italian card game to propel the action forward and weave its unusual story."
The theater company is accepting donation through its website toward the completion of the production.Read the full article
