Local developer Tony Fraga wants to build a $28 million hotel downtown at the intersection of Battery Park and Page Avenues. He’ll present more about his plans at a neighborhood meeting Wednesday, Oct. 30.

“I am excited to announce that I am in the process of developing plans for a new hotel to be built at the corner of Battery Park Avenue and Page Avenue,” the letter from Fraga to downtown neighbors reads. “The project is being designed to comply with all requirements of the Downtown Master Development as adopted by the Asheville City Council in 2009. The project represents a $28 million dollar investment and will add new excitement to our side of town.”

The meeting begins 5 p.m. in the downstairs of Isa’s Bistro, with the presentation to start at 6 p.m.

It’s not the first time Fraga, who owns the Haywood Park Hotel and many other downtown properties, has tried a redevelopment in the area. A major project that would have included a 25-story hotel and a 23-story condominium building, along with several smaller structures, was withdrawn in 2008 after controversy about its scale and the impact on the surrounding area.

Freudian slip much, Mr. Fraga? It’s not a “Downtown Master Development“. It’s known as the “Downtown Master Plan“.

Who cares? As we have learned, “Plans” are all well & good, but they need to make way for “Development”.

14 stories! That would be 6 stories taller than the Flatiron Building across the street and 7 stories taller than the adjacent Battery Park Condos. This is going to block a lot of sunlight in this section of downtown.
