We spend a large portion of our week at work, so it should be no surprise that the workplace environment has a huge impact on community health, and one of the most compelling reasons for employers to take steps to promote wellness is the bottom line. Health care costs are a major stress on businesses of all sizes. A study by Gallup says that employees with thriving well-being have 41 percent lower health-related costs than those who are struggling.
Health experts emphasize how employers can take a broad range of steps to improve the health of their employees — part-time and full-time alike. Results from the survey will be shared with employers and community partners to highlight exceptional examples of how employers are supporting employee health. They’ll also provide a forum for discussion for employers who want to try out new ideas.
The survey will also provide baseline data that will allow the committee to track progress in improving community health measures over time.
Buncombe County employers are invited to participate by going to www.ashevillechamber.org/wellnesssurvey. Responses submitted by March 28 will be entered to win a free team registration for the 2014 Chamber Challenge 5K on June 6.
