Asheville Wing War was spicy fun (click for the winners!)

The Asheville Wing War was waged on Saturday, July 16 at the Garage at Biltmore. In a very packed house, 12 local restaurants put their best wings forward, vying for the favor of the five celebrity judges (including this writer) — who required a good amount of beer to soothe the heat. Or at least that’s what we told the bartender.

Wings were judged according to style: traditional buffalo-style and specialty. A first, second and third place were chosen by the judges, and the crowd got its say with the People’s Choice Award.

The winners:

Specialty
1st Place: East Village Grille
2nd Place: Asheville Yacht Club
3rd Place: Modaddy’s Bar and Grill

People’s Choice: Asheville Yacht Club

Traditional
First Place: Universal Joint
Second Place: Modaddy’s Bar and Grill
Third Place: Luella’s Bar-B-Que

People’s Choice: Universal Joint

Beer was provided by Blue Point Brewery and pizza was provided by the winners of last year’s Pizza Wars: Fiore’s and Frank’s Roman Pizza. The event supported My Sister’s Place, a domestic violence advocacy group.

  1. Ripped Off

This event was a rip off! 1 hour after the event started, there were no wings, 1 beer option (and it was foul) and no pizza. $15 a ticket and no food? Inexcusable.

How was there even a People’s Choice? Wouldn’t people have to eat in order for there to be a choice?

This event was a major disapointment – especially compared to last year’s pizza wars. Last year there were food trucks going back and forth all night long to get pizza. With a similar name, one would have assumed it was safe to buy tickets to the wing wars.

If the money hadn’t been going for charity, I would have insisted for my money back. I’ll think twice before purchasing tickets to something like this again.
